Reduce the risks of bad LASIK surgery.......18th Aug 2009

If you are thinking about Lasik vision correction surgery but are concerned about the risks, you must understand that any surgical procedure, not just eye surgery, carries an amount of risk.

However the laser eye correction procedures performed today are much safer than when this form of treatment was first introduced. It is extremely rare for complications to occur involving the loss of sight, and minor complications can be resolved with additional procedures or medical treatment.

Of course, it would be extremely helpful if you knew a friend or relative who has had this treatment and can recommend their surgeon. However, if this is not the case, take your time researching laser surgery, the advantages as well as the disadvantages. The first step to take to endeavour to reduce the risk of having bad Lasik vision correction surgery is to thoroughly research each aspect of the project. Know and understand your eye problem.

It is vital that you gather as much information as possible regarding your eye problem, as the treatments for each condition vary.

Visit several clinics (at least two), enquire which forms of treatment are available for your problem, assess costs, but most importantly check that the eye specialist at the clinic of your choice is a reputable, experienced, skilful and competent doctor.

A first-class eye specialist will ensure you are thoroughly screened prior to treatment. Your general health and any medication you are currently taking will be discussed, as well as your sight problems, and you must be completely honest at this stage, and be quite frank and open about any existing conditions you have.

For example, some diabetics are not ideal for Lasik eye correction surgery as their condition inhibits their ability to heal.

Should you suffer from dry eye syndrome, inform the eye specialist and it might be possible to treat this prior to Lasik vision correction surgery.

Your eye specialist will advise if you are suitable for Lasik vision correction or not.

During the initial consultation the eye specialist will carry out a thorough examination of your eyes and will advise you of their considered treatment, and what they think is the best way to approach your problem.

From your research you will be familiar with the names of different laser treatments, such as Lasik, Lasek, Wavefront, and IntraLase to name a few, so you may be able to follow everything being discussed. But if you are confused, ask the eye specialist to clarify, so you completely understand the situation.

Also, ask them why they have chosen a particular form of treatment - is it the best method for you?

Whether to undergo Lasik vision correction is a personal and serious decision which must not be undertaken lightly.

Be aware of all the risks involved, remember "why" is a wonderful word, use it as often as you feel the need to, and having carried out the necessary research you will have taken all the steps you can into reducing the risk of bad eye surgery.
