Preparing for Laser Eye Surgery...........29th Dec 2009

Preparations for your laser eye surgery begin with thorough research of your eye irregularities.

It will help you if you understand each aspect of them, the procedures that are available to treat these problems, the clinics which provide this type of surgery, and most importantly the surgeon or eye doctor you wish to look after your eyes for you during your eye treatment.

Of course there are risks involved - as there are with every sort of surgical procedure - but you need to consider the advantages and disadvantages before you commit to eye treatment.

Apart from researching information, visit clinics and have a look around as most clinics are perfectly happy to show prospective patients their facilities. During your initial consultation, the surgeon will carry out a thorough examination of your eyes and also discuss your general state of health and any medication you are taking.

He or she will advise you whether or not you are a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery, as well as what he or she considers to be the best form of treatment for you.

There are several forms of laser eye treatment and it would be prudent of you to ask your specialist why they have chosen a particular treatment for you.

Do ask questions, especially what happens after Lasik treatment. The surgeon will be perfectly happy to explain things again if you have not understood everything you are being told.

Don't forget to ascertain that the surgeon will be available after Lasik in the unlikely event there are complications and you need to see them again.

Take your time when making important decisions and when you have finally decided when, where, and how much it will cost, don't rush into eye treatment surgery.

Do not be swayed into surgery the following day, leave yourself time to get relaxed and in the right frame of mind for your laser eye procedure.

Having decided to go ahead, sorted out the finance, and booked time off work, don't forget to ask a friend or relative if they can accompany you to the clinic, both on the actual day of your eye surgery and also for a follow up visit the following day, as you will be unable to drive.

Remember on the day of your surgery, no eye make-up, creams or lotions are to be used as the area around your eyes needs to be very clean. In fact, some surgeons will supply a special cleansing lotion for you to use prior to going to the clinic.

Following your procedure, you will have a shield placed around the eye area. This is to stop you rubbing your eye as the cornea is extremely delicate after Lasik. Be prepared for the after effects of this type of surgery.

Your sight may be blurred, the whites of the eye may appear red looking but these symptoms will clear in a few days or so. We each heal at different rates, so patience is a necessity.

Obviously contact sports and similar activities are out of the question immediately after Lasik treatment, and you can spend the next few days relaxing and being spoilt by your friends and family.
