Age Related Long Sightedness - Presbyopia
'Normal' Vision
The front surface of the eye, known as the Cornea, acts as a lens through which light is collected. With good eyesight, the image that you are viewing is normally brought into focus on the back of the eye which is called the retina. Eyesight difficulties tend to occur when that image is not able to be correctly focused on the retina and your vision becomes blurred.

When you look at something, light from that object passes into the eye
through your cornea then through the lens towards the retina at the back
of the eye. In 'normal' or healthy eyes the lens and cornea focus these
light rays onto a small area of your retina and this enables you to view
objects clearly
However, your vision can sometimes lose clarity which can be due to a
variation in these 'normal' parameters.
These variations are split into two main categories: short and long sightedness.
Age Related Long-sightedness (Presbyopia)
Age related presbyopia or long-sightedness is a natural effect brought on by age. The eye muscles no longer have the strength to change the shape of the natural lens within the eye as it hardens with age and so the ability to focus on objects close up is lost.
It is now possible to remove or reduce the need for glasses or contacts by the use of procedure called 'Monovision'. This procedure involves using laser surgery to treat one eye, usually the dominant one, for distance vision and treat the other eye for near vision.
This
merged or blended vision allows you to see both at short and long
distances thereby reducing or removing the need for glasses or contacts.
The brain is an incredible thing and can very quickly adjust to the information that comes through the optic nerve and is able to blend both images together for clear eyesight both close-up and at distance.
This treatment may not be for everyone, but the vast majority who do consider it do proceed with the 'Monovision' laser eye surgery and do benefit.
Successfully treating age related reading vision is an area where the Allegretto laser technology used at various clinics excels as it is perfectly suited to adjusting the visual acuity that gives the optimum balance for blended vision.
Laser Eye Treatment
After an initial consultation and before surgery is considered, you can be given the chance to experience what Monovision would be like through the use of temporary contacts or glasses.
If the diagnostics taken at a consultation show that you are suitable and you feel comfortable with the altered vision for both long distance and near vision, then you should be able to proceed with treatment.
A Wavefront laser is used to create a customised profile for the reshaping of the cornea that will enable you to enjoy both distance and near vision. This is achieved by customising the difference between the treated eyes thereby providing a customised treatment for you.
